"A Full-Length Horror Film Based on 'Outlast' is in the Works"

Mount Massive Asylum and investigative journalist Miles Upshur, the haunting duo from the popular horror game Outlast, are making their way to the big screen. Lionsgate, in partnership with the 2013 game's developer, Red Barrels, recently announced a feature-length project in development with the script penned by the game’s original writer, J.T. Petty. Alongside Petty, renowned horror producer Roy Lee, known for hits like It (2017), Doctor Sleep (2019), and Barbarian (2022), will bring his extensive experience to the adaptation.

Outlast is celebrated for its intense atmosphere and spine-chilling storyline. The plot follows Miles Upshur, a journalist investigating the eerie, abandoned Mount Massive Asylum. While there, he encounters deranged patients who were once subjects of gruesome experiments. Producer Roy Lee believes the game’s elaborate lore makes it perfect for adaptation: "Its layered backstory provides the ideal foundation for a psychologically and physically terrifying film."

The original Outlast game, released in 2013, has since expanded with three sequels: Outlast: Whistleblower (2014), Outlast 2 (2017), and the latest entry, The Outlast Trials. Each chapter adds depth to the game’s dark universe, setting the stage for a terrifying cinematic experience that fans are eagerly awaiting.
