Pop and rock music legend dies at age 83
Tina Turner, the famous American rock star, composer and actress who set a string of records for ticket sales for her shows, whose dramatic triumph over domestic violence and the music industry itself made her an entertainment icon, has died in Switzerland at age 84.
Officials said Tina Turner passed away "after an extended illness" at her home in Cusnacht near Zurich, Switzerland. "With her, the world is losing not only a musical legend but also a role model," a statement to that effect said.
What is Tina Turner known for?
In her long career, Tina Turner has sold more than 200 million albums worldwide and won nine Grammy Awards. Fame came to the singer in the 1960s when she became a central figure in The Ike & Tina Turner Revue, a blues band from St. Louis that went on to become a popular rock band.
In 1976, Tina Turner divorced. She detailed her abusive relationship with her husband in the 1986 bestseller I, Tina, which served as the basis for the 1993 biographical film What Love Can Do.
Tina Turner has appeared in such films as "Tommy," "Mad Max 3: Under the Thunderdome," "The Last Movie Hero" and others.
