New movies based on J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" universe are officially in development by Warner Bros. and Andy Serkis, who played Gollum in Peter Jackson's trilogy and repeated the iconic role in "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," is the first of the original cast to say that he is ready to return to Middle-earth.

While Amazon Prime Video is filming the second season of "The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power" series as of this writing, Warner Bros. surprised Middle-earth fans in late February 2023 by announcing that newly appointed studio executives Mike De Luca and Pam Abdi had struck a deal to make "multiple" movies based on J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" books. In conversations with the media, Peter Jackson and his colleagues in the original trilogy, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, admitted that Warner Bros. "has kept us informed every step of the way" regarding the new Lord of the Rings films. "We look forward to further talks with the studio to hear their vision for the future development of the franchise," all three recently stated.
