"Archive 81" shut down after first season

Netflix will not renew the mystery drama "Archive 81" for a second season. This decision comes two months after the series debuted on January 14, 2022, starring Mamudu Ati and Dina Shihabi in the lead roles.
The series' closure is rather surprising, as "Archive 81" not only ranked in the top ten of the best original streaming shows in the weekly ratings compiled by Nielsen, but also briefly ranked first on Netflix in the United States before being dethroned by a new season of "Ozark." Since streaming always focuses its decision-making on an analysis of viewership-to-production cost ratios, the number of viewers attracted by "Archive 81" may not have met the threshold set by Netflix for the series based on its budget.
"Archive 81" is based on a horror podcast and was produced by James Wan's studio Atomic Monster. The script was prepared by Rebecca Sonnenschein, who served as executive producer and showrunner.
The plot centers on archivist Dan Turner (Ati), who takes on the job of restoring a collection of damaged 1994 videotapes made by documentary filmmaker Melody Pendras (Shihabi). The tapes contain her investigation of a dangerous cult. As Dan learns Melody's story, he becomes convinced that he can save her from a death that occurred 25 years ago.
