"Batman" fails at launch in China
The film adaptation of the DC comics "Batman" started in China much worse than the most pessimistic predictions predicted. In the premiere weekend it was able to collect only 12.1 million dollars. Note that the original expectations of collecting in the range of 25-30 million dollars, in the future forecast was adjusted to 20 million, but he was not destined to come true.
Notably, the word-of-mouth radio was very encouraging, with a 7.7 on Douban and 8.9 on the main ticketing apps Maoyan and Tao Piao Piao. However, fan recognition did not result in a significant increase in ticket sales. Moreover, Maoyan has now also changed its forecast for the final result of "Batman" in China. It is expected to finish the box office with only $26 million.
The performance of the new version of Batman, played by British actor Robert Pattinson, was probably also affected by the new restrictive measures, which were imposed by the Chinese authorities in response to another outbreak of the coronavirus. About 30 percent of cinemas in major cities were closed.
The most successful DC superhero project is still Justice League, which grossed more than $100 million in this market.
