"Batman" had a very weak start in China
"Batman," directed by Matt Reeves and starring Robert Pattinson as the superhero, had a predictably weak start in China. On its premiere day, the film adaptation earned just $2.1 million, including some pre-sales for Saturday and Sunday.
Beijing's largest movie ticketing app, Maoyan, is predicting final receipts in the $33 million range, indicating an extremely low level of interest among Chinese audiences in a new take on the Batman story.
Even if "Batman" revenues suddenly rise sharply, the new film will not come close to the figures in China of previous comic book adaptations on the subject. Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight 2: Legend Reborn," for example, earned $52.8 million back in 2012, when the Chinese theater market was much smaller than it is today. "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" then grossed $95.8 million in 2016, a result that was improved by "Justice League" in 2017 to $106 million.
At the worldwide box office, "Batman" had grossed over $500 million at the time of publication of this post.
