Fans of the legendary melodrama "Dirty Dancing" will finally get a chance to find out what happened to Baby almost four decades after the film's debut. That will be revealed in 2024 with the release of a sequel starring the original film's star Jennifer Gray. Lionsgate Studios has announced that "Dirty Dancing 2" will be released in theaters on Feb. 9, 2024, in advance of Valentine's Day.
Directed by Jonathan Levine, the film's plot will center on Baby (Gray) returning to Max Kellerman's resort. Johnny, a character created by the late Patrick Swayze, does not appear in the upcoming film.
Most important to us was Jennifer's involvement. She's invaluable. We're going to try to get as many people from the original picture as we can and we want to show respect in every way," Levine said after announcing work on the sequel earlier this year. "Although the original 'Dirty Dancing' has always been one of my favorite films, I never thought I would direct a sequel," Levine continued. - While working on the script, I fell in love with the characters (new and old), the Catskills, 1990s New York, and the music, which will range from songs from the original film to '90s hip-hop. I look forward to seeing Jennifer on set to tell this beautiful story of summer, romance and dancing to a new generation of viewers. And for those who have been with us a long time, I promise we won't ruin your childhood. We'll take it on with sophistication, ambition and, above all, love."

Dirty Dancing, released in 1987, was inspired by the almost biographical story of Elinor Bergstine, who prepared the script. The picture received four Golden Globe nominations, including acting nominations for Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Gray. The song "(I`ve Had) The Time of My Life" won an Oscar in addition to a Golden Globe. In 2011, Lionsgate tried to make a remake, but was unsuccessful.
