After several disappointing starts, Disney Studios has returned to work on Tron 3, with Jared Leto confirmed for the lead role. This time around, Pirates of the Caribbean 5: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Maleficent: Lord of Darkness director Joakim Ronning is being considered for the director's position and is in talks with him. The film, nominally titled Tron: Ares, is set to be the sequel to the iconic 1982 film Tron starring Jeff Bridges and its 2010 sequel Tron: Legacy, which starred Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde in the lead roles, and Jeff Bridges. "Tron: Legacy was the feature directorial debut of director Joseph Kosinski.
Jared Leto's involvement as a star and producer in the third installment of the sci-fi franchise was first announced in 2017, and he has continued to be listed on the project ever since. Garth Davies ('The Lion') signed on to direct the film in 2020, but eventually dropped out of the project. Jesse Wigutow remains as writer for Tron 3, while Justin Springer, Jeffrey Silver and Emma Ladbrook share production duties. Filming is scheduled to begin in August 2023 in Vancouver.
At the time of writing, Disney Studios is refraining from comment.
Joachim Ronning. Born 30.05.1972.
Joachim Ronning already has experience of working with Disney studios. Having received an Oscar nomination early in his career for the sea adventure Kon-Tiki, the Norwegian director was invited by Disney to direct the fifth film in the 2017 Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, which was immediately followed by the 2019 sequel Maleficent. Joaquim Ronning recently completed production on the biographical film The Girl and the Sea about Gertrude Ederle (Daisy Ridley), the first woman to cross the English Channel. The film is due to debut on Disney+ in 2023.
