Dwayne Johnson announces Moana feature film
The project will be based on the Hawaiian legend and cartoon of the same name
Dwayne Johnson has announced the launch of the feature film Moana, which will be based on the Hawaiian legend and the 2016 feature animated film, in which the actor himself voiced one of the main characters.
"I am deeply moved and overwhelmed with gratitude to be able to bring the beautiful story of Moana to the big screen. This is my culture and this story symbolises the grace of our people and the strength of their spirit. I have proudly absorbed this tradition with my skin and carry it in my soul, and this unique opportunity to reconnect with Maui, apparently inspired by the spirit of my late grandfather, Supreme Chief Peter Maivia, is very meaningful to me. I want to thank my partners at Disney for their steadfast commitment to this special endeavour for me because there is no better studio for us to honour our people's history, our passion and our purpose," said Dwayne Johnson.
He will also act as the film's producer and principal consultant. Disney said that, like its animated predecessor, the Moana film will "celebrate the communities and traditions of the Pacific Islanders, shown from the perspective of a young woman striving to forge her own path. Moana's journey of self-discovery and reflection on the lives of her ancestors has captured hearts around the world, as has her newfound friendship with an exiled demigod named Maui."
