Emmy Awards Ratings Collapse
The ratings for the major television awards ceremony, the 2022 Emmys, have literally collapsed after a minor recovery a year earlier.
The show, hosted by Kenan Thompson and airing from 8 to 11:15 p.m. ET, drew only about 5.9 million viewers. A year earlier, it was watched by 7.9 million people. According to Nielsen, the ceremony received a 1.09 rating in the advertiser's target audience of 18-49-year-olds.
The Emmy ceremony was broadcast on NBC for the first time since 2018. At the time, it was watched by about 10.2 million viewers (which was a historic low for the Emmy Awards at the time).
Viewership in 2021 was higher than in 2019, when it was watched by about 6.9 million people. In fact, the Emmys was the only awards show last season that managed to avoid a steep drop in the ratings (the Oscars and the Grammys failed to achieve an audience increase).
Still, the Television Academy Awards remained the least popular of the major awards ceremonies over the past seven years. And the show was taking a serious beating before the pandemic, dropping sharply in 2019 from the nine million viewers it received in 2018.
As a reminder, the 2022 major Emmys went to "The Heirs," "Ted Lasso" and the mini-series "White Lotus."
The Emmy Award
Awarded by the American Academy of Television in conjunction with the International Television Academy. It is the equivalent of an Oscar. It has been awarded since 1949. The symbol of the award, a winged woman, was invented by engineer Louis McManus, who used his wife as a model.
