HBO Max will cut production of original content in Europe
The victim of the global savings program, announced by the management of Warner Bros. Discovery, which aims to reduce costs by at least three billion dollars, will have a strategy for development in Europe.
As the media conglomerate seeks to revise its priorities in the area of streaming, it will no longer release original film projects on HBO Max in Northern Europe (Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland), Central Europe, the Netherlands and Turkey, and will remove some content from its platform to free up licensing agreements in other countries.
A statement released on the occasion said the following: "As we continue to work to merge HBO Max and Discovery+ into one global streaming service representing the full breadth of Warner Bros. Discovery, we are reviewing our current offering for existing services. As part of this process, we have decided to remove some original programming from HBO Max, as well as to revise our early programming development plans for HBO Max in North and Central Europe. We will also phase out our development activities in the new territories of the Netherlands and Turkey, which began last year."
The news, which was shared with staff and production partners, will be a heavy blow to drama show creators as well as to the HBO Max team in Europe.
