"Moonlight" director works on "True Detective" sequel
HBO Channel has begun work on the fourth season of the popular "True Detective" anthology. According to Deadline, the WarnerMedia-owned cable network is developing a new version of the crime drama, tentatively titled "True Detective: Night Country," which is being overseen by Issa Lopez and Oscar winner Barry Jenkins ("Moonlight").
In February 2022, HBO and HBO Max content director Casey Bloys revealed that HBO was in talks with new writers to bring back the dark crime drama and hoped to find a new approach to the story. Bloys noted that "there's movement around 'True Detective,' there are things we're excited about." Recall that the show, created and written by Nick Pizzolatto, ran from 2014 to 2019 and consists of three seasons.
Lopez will serve as writer and director of the pilot and will share executive producer duties with Jenkins, Adele Romanski and Mark Seriak. Anonymous Content Studios, which produced the first three installments, will also be involved in production, so Pizzolatto will likely be brought on board.
In 2017, Lopez directed the acclaimed horror film Tigers Are Not Afraid, which won awards and rave reviews from Stephen King, Neil Gaiman and Guillermo Del Toro.
