Ryan Reynolds is now the owner of a Formula 1 team
'Deadpool' star invests in Alpine Formula 1 team
'Deadpool' star Ryan Reynolds is expanding his business interests in the world of sport. The actor's investment firm Maximum Effort Investments, whose other sponsors include actors Rob McElhenney and Michael B. Jordan, is teaming up with private equity firms RedBird Capital Partners and Otro Capital to buy a 24 percent stake in the Alpine Formula 1 racing team.
The partners are paying the team's owner, Renault Group, about 200 million euros ($218 million) for the stake, valuing the entire team at about $900 million.
Alpine is a mid-tier team that has been on the rise in recent years. It finished fourth out of ten in the 2022 season. Led by French drivers Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon, Alpine is currently fifth in the 2023 championship standings.
The deal involving Ryan Reynolds continues a rising trend in the value of sports teams and rights, whether mainstream or more niche, as traditional media companies and technology giants equally vie for live streaming of races that attract viewers' attention.
What sports teams does Ryan Reynolds own
The actor's first attempt at sports ownership came in November 2020, when he and Rob McElhenney teamed up to buy Welsh football club Wrexham AFC. They went on to create content based on that experience, while raising the profile of their team with the documentary series Welcome to Wrexham, which airs on FX.
