The fifth installment of the "Scream" horror franchise took in $30.6 million at the North American box office at the start.
The tally will also include an extended Martin Luther King Day weekend (celebrated Monday, Jan. 17), after which the total will reach the $35 million mark.
Meanwhile, Spider-Man: No Way Home was forced to drop to number two on the chart ($26 million) a month after its release. In total, the comic book movie made over $700 million in the United States, making it the fourth highest-grossing film in the history of the country: after Avatar ($760 million), Avengers: The Final Solution ($858 million) and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936 million).
