"Sonic 2" got off to the best start among video game adaptations

Not only did "Sonic 2 at the Movies" get off to a successful start at the domestic box office, but it also set an all-time record among video game adaptations. It grossed $71 million in North America in its opening weekend.
The result of "Sonic 2" is a victory for Paramount and the industry as a whole. The filmmakers have done a terrific job of presenting audiences with a film that both delights legions of Sonic fans and also appeals to a wide family audience. Developing the franchise is no small feat, and premiering at +22 percent over the first film is a remarkable achievement. Kudos to the filmmakers and to Paramount's marketing and distribution departments for the fantastic job of bringing the film to a worldwide market!" said Paramount Studios head of distribution Chris Aronson in a statement.
Note also that for the lead antagonist Jim Carrey, the starting result of the sequel was the best in the U.S. market of his career, surpassing the achievement of the comedy "Bruce Almighty" in 2003 issue with 68 million dollars.
Against this backdrop, the collections of another debutant, the Michael Bay-directed action film "ER," look particularly disappointing. It only managed to take fourth place with $8.7 million.
