The American Rust series got a second chance on Amazon Freevee
Amazon's ad-funded free streaming service Amazon Freevee has come to the rescue of Showtime's cancelled drama series American Rust after its first season. Amazon Freevee has ordered the production of a second season, which will see starring actors Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney return to work.
"American Rust" was originally in development on USA Network in November 2017. The project then moved to Showtime, and Daniels was confirmed for the lead role and named executive producer. In January of this year, Showtime shut down the series, after which Amazon Freevee stepped in.
I am grateful to Amazon Freevee for giving us the opportunity to do a second season of American Rust. Set in a small, struggling American town, our authentic, realistically told story is made for streaming. Films that are no longer being made take on a life of their own as a series in places like Amazon Freevee. That's where I want to be," Daniels commented on the news.
'American Rust is a fascinating and topical project, and that's exactly the kind of audience Amazon Freevee likes, and we're thrilled to present this ambitious series to our customers for free,' Amazon Freevee said in a statement. - We look forward to seeing how Boat Rocker Studios and Dan Futterman continue to tell this compelling story."
Based on the critically acclaimed novel of the same name by Philip Meyer, the series is a gripping family drama set in the town of Rust Belt in southwestern Pennsylvania. The plot centers on police chief Del Harris (Daniels), who has to make difficult choices after the son of the woman (Tierney) he loves commits murder. Production of the second season is scheduled to begin later this year.
