The prestigious British Independent Film Awards will become gender-neutral, meaning that nominees will no longer be categorized according to their biological sex.
According to a press release from the organizers, In its 25th year, the BIFAs have replaced the traditional awards for Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Collaboration and Best Ensemble Actor, with the awards for Best Lead Actor, Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Actor in a Supporting Role.
We are thrilled to be able to present new expanded nominations that will more fully reflect the range of acting talent in British independent cinema and allow us to celebrate even more impressive work than ever before," said BIFA directors Amy Gustin and Dean Wallace in a statement.
The list of nominees for 2022 will be announced on November 3, 2022, and the awards ceremony will take place on December 4.
Recall that earlier the decision to abandon the gender system of distribution of awards was announced by a number of major European film forums. For example, the organizers of the Berlin International Film Festival decided to abandon the gender identification of nominees and laureates from 2021.
