Warner Bros. wrote off hundreds of millions of dollars because of the closure of film projects
Warner Bros. Discovery was able to achieve an $825 million write-off as a result of closing film projects or not developing those planned by previous management.
The deterioration in content quality and the development write-downs were the result of a global review of content policy following the merger," the company said in a statement on the matter.
The write-downs were spread across the company's studio business (which includes film and television segments), network business and streaming services such as HBO Max and Discovery+ and involved programs that had already been created or were in production.
Notably, these impressive figures do not yet apply to projects such as the "Batgirl" comic book adaptation, which will most likely be accounted for in next quarter's reports.
Recall that the creators of the "Batgirl" movie were told that the project would not move forward despite the fact that it was in post-production. Company sources speculated that the film was frozen to save on taxes and figures released Friday confirm that.
Executives at Warner Bros. Discovery has already announced that it intends to cut costs by three billion dollars.
